Day 74 Sales: Apple iPhone vs. Google Nexus One vs. Motorola Droid

Through applications using Flurry for analytics reporting, Flurry can detect and count unique devices in the market such as Google Nexus One and Motorola Droids. Because applications embedded with Flurry have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices, Flurry is able to make reliable estimates about total handset sales.

Earlier this year, Flurry estimated both first week and first month sales of Nexus One Sales compared to Motorola Droid and the first generation iPhone, among others. Despite the fact that the Google Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date, and enjoyed substantial buzz leading up to its release, the launch has been overshadowed by lower than expected sales. In our previous reports we offered several possible reasons including unconventional choices in marketing, pricing and distribution.

So, why 74? Simply put, according to Apple, the original iPhone reached 1 million units sold in that many days. And since the Nexus One launched on January 5, we've had Friday, March 19 (aka day 74) circled on our calendars. The comparison is interesting because the iPhone and Nexus One each represent Apple and Google's first fully branded handsets, respectively. We add the Motorola Droid as a point of comparison, and because it's the fastest selling Android phone to date.

The chart below compares the sales results through each of their respective first 74 days. The launch dates were: iPhone, June 29, 2007; Droid, November 5, 2009; and, Nexus One, January 5, 2010.  Please note that we forecasted the last few days of Nexus One's first 74 days sales based sales of the first 70 days we tracked at the time of writing this report.

Sales Nexus One, Droid, iPhone

Inspecting the graph, it's immediately clear that Nexus One sales continue to pale in comparison to iPhone 1G and Motorola Droid, with each besting Nexus One sales by roughly 8 times over the same time period.

At the same time, an interesting side-story is that the Motorola Droid edged out iPhone 1G over the first 74 days, coming in at just over one million sold through, by our calculations. This was surprising enough that we re-ran our estimates several times and still came up with the same results. Thinking about the differences associated with each launch (operator, year, etc.), we believe there are three underlying drivers of Droid worth keeping in mind compared to the other two handsets:

1. Consumer Perception & Demand: Motorola Droid launched over 2.5 years after the iPhone 1G. (Nov 2009 vs. July 2007). When the iPhone launched, consumers' concept of a mobile computing device as we now understand it, was very different. Since then, Apple has spent millions of dollars training and educating consumers about capabilities of such a device, which was no small feat especially after its first foray into the handset business (Motorola ROKR E1 in 2005). Until the iPhone was introduced, most consumers, especially in the U.S. had thought of their phones as, well, just phones.  Finally, it's worth noting that the Motorola Droid could be considered Android's "third generation" handset, which benefited from generated awareness by preceding G1 and MyTouch 3G handsets.

2. Relative Subscriber Bases: Droid launched on Verizon, a larger network with more subscribers than AT&T, especially when considering AT&T's 2007 size (63.7 million at the time of iPhone launch) versus Verizon's 2009 size (89 million at the end of Q3). Additionally, there was pent up demand among the Verizon subscriber base for an iPhone killer, which is exactly how Verizon positioned the Droid. Finally, Verizon backed the launch with advertising support of at least $100 million.

3. Holiday Season Sales: Droid benefited from launching on Nov 5 and having its first 74 days lifted by the holiday season, which is the highest selling period of the year for handsets. Neither iPhone 1G nor Nexus One's first 74 days spanned a holiday period.

As Google and Apple continue to battle for the mobile marketplace, Google Nexus One may go down as a grand, failed experiment or one that ultimately helped Google learn something that will prove important in years to come. Apple's more vertically integrated strategy vs. Google's more open Android platform approach offer strengths and weaknesses that remind us of PC vs. Mac from the 1980's. A key difference this time around is that Apple is enjoying much more 3rd party developer support, whose innovative applications push the limits of what the hardware can do. Ultimately, however, developers support hardware with the largest installed base first. For Android to make progress faster, from a sales perspective, it needs more Droids and fewer Nexus Ones going forward.

Comments

We shouldn't use the numbers from original iPhone as it wasn't a full smartphone as the current iPhones or Android handsets are and target consumers are also different now.
We should then compare 3GS numbers in US.

Original iPhone was the first generation of multiple handsets, not only Apple's.

Don't forget pricing. The iPhone launched without subsidies at $499/$599, an upfront cost that undoubtedly slowed adoption.

iPhone is the Jesus Phone...simply...
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 9:41 AM by Sachin
Also, don't forget that original iPhone was flying off the shelves so fast that Apple / AT&T were having trouble keeping them in stock for the first month. If they had anticipated demand better, the numbers may be different.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 9:56 AM by Jesse
The Nexus One would be much better if it wasn't released shortly after the Droid and with relatively little pre-launch press.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 10:08 AM by Hinano
This is a ridiculous comparison. If you're going to compare the first 74 days of a product, then do it on a fair basis. Compare the first 74 days of the original iPhone (new platform) with the first 74 days of the G1 (first Android - new platform) or compare the sales of the Droid with the iPhone 3Gs, etc.

That's a comparison that would make more sense, but I suppose it would give you your preconceived statistics favoring Android, now would it Peter?
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 10:54 AM by Steve
The Nexus one would have sold a ton more if it was on Verizon's network.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 11:08 AM by tyler C
And the iPhone wouldn't have sold a ton more if they were on Verizon? The only reason Droid is selling so well is because iPhone is still exclusive to AT&T. Most everyone wants the iPhone, but many are not willing to switch vendors.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 11:32 AM by Chark
Chark is right; I switched to AT&T for the iPhone 3GS and am horribly disappointed with how craptastic the voice connection is with AT&T; it drops and can't hold a line even with all bars lit up. 3GS is solid though, but kinda makes it useless when you can't talk...
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 11:39 AM by Scotty
I think a different (and potentially fairer comparison) of handset sales would be the following:

First Week G1 Sales - 60,000*

First Week Droid Sales - 250,000*

First Week IPhone 3Gs Sales - 1,600,000*

* data taken from a separate Flurry post

Clearly, 250,000 Droids in one week is nothing to sneeze at and the weak sales number for the Nexus One probably have a lot to do with Google's decision to go with the # 3 or 4 cell phone company in the US (T-Mobile).

Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 11:47 AM by keith
It should also be mentioned that the original iPhone had fewer apps (only those supplied by Apple), so it is literally not apples to apples.

The bottom line is that Google is a one trick pony company (97% revenue from search) - not saying they're not smart but as you don't send a geologist to build a smartphone, you don't send Google. Clearly (patent pending) borrowing muchfrom Apple (plus being a board member) - all of which they won't help them going forward and after all that, the end result is the Android - nice but merely slightly better than the usual efforts from Moto, Sony, LG & Samsung. Funny how they all had 'real' multitouch AFTER the iPhone or not so legally funny. The Android phones are what they are - an app memory limited phone OS made to look like the iPhone ... and unlike the iPhone, cannot be upgraded to the latest firmware and OS with ONE CLICK. This is typical of a follower, they get some of the details but miss the big picture but again, that's fine - it's a business though Google makes ZERO dollars - so if you want to support a not-for-profit business model with a me-too product, that's fine but don't confuse the two. And you're really STILL defending Verizon? Yea, real customer friendly company and sure, if you need 3G in Billings, great but if you want 3G at the fastest speed and you live in a metro area, it's AT&T ... plus, Verizon's network has not been really tested with a 3G device that has sold 50-million units (in the US) so no one really knows how it would hold up if the iphone were on it ...
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 11:56 AM by jbelkin
Nexus One is a dog, not because of the network they chose, but because of Google's complete lack of a distribution strategy. It's amazing that they sold as many as they did, considering that they launched a cell phone without cell phone retailers.

Sounds like these apple fanboys are starting to get worried
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 12:26 PM by Austin
To be a REAL player in the market, Google should have released the nexus with at a cheaper unlocked price point (say $275). Also , 3g should work on tmobile and at&T. Plus a couple of super google nexus-one only apps wouldn't hurt. Then they would have seen the adoption numbers they desire.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 12:30 PM by mp
Another interesting angle here is in terms of overall platform market share. iPhone is iPhone and no one besides Apple/AT&T can sell an iPhone or a derivative thereof. However, the Motorola Droid is just one Android phone among many, and they span across all the major wireless providers.

Is this helping Android, as a platform, grab more market share than it would have otherwise? How does adoption of the iPhone platform trend when compared to adoption of the Android platform.

There are some good comments in these threads, although I think it's silly to say almost everyone wants an iPhone. I had a full-screen touch phone running Windows mobile *before* iPhone was released. What iPhone has done, in my opinion, is get a lot of vendors moving on making some real innovations that are long overdue. It's a fun time to shop for a phone!
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 12:47 PM by Chris Leonard
I just ditched Verizon a month ago and bought an iPhone 3GS. Good decision. Sure, AT+T has some capacity issues, and maybe some coverage issues, but my phone has worked everywhere I've been so far. I've dropped one call, in the same location where Verizon dropped calls. 3G service comes and goes, sometimes, but then so does WiFi, depending on local interference.

Apple has, from what I can tell, at least a two year lead on technology, infrastructure, and marketing strategy.

It's been interesting to watch Micro$lop deny, deny, deny that the iPhone is important, or matters, or will even affect the marketplace for mobile devices. The same can be said for other providers.

Here is another comparison - First 74 days of sales for the Nexus vs first day orders for the iPad. Which would be even. Ouch on the Nexus.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1:02 PM by robert Walch
The Moto Droid is the only Android phone to have an advertising campaign. When the iPhone was released, it benefited from a ton of hype (note first week sales). Comparing iPhone sales with the largely unadvertised G1 or N1 is silly.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1:03 PM by jim

There was one other, at least. Remember all those commercials for the Sprint HTC Hero?

"an interesting side-story is that the Motorola Droid edged out iPhone 1G over the first 74 days, coming in at just over one million sold through, by our calculations"

Well your calculations aren't very scientific. When Apple says they sold a million units in 74 days that likely means they sold at least a million units in that time. That number isn't exact, and could have been 1,050,001 for all we know.

Way to go Google.
Too many PhD folks in your campus believe this is "The Matrix"
Not only you are being hurt, but also T-Mobile who is unable to sell the phone directly in their stores nor to support the customers because is a "google phone".
Idiots. You're only helping Apple and the big 2 wireless guys with this approach.
Another China fiasco?
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1:39 PM by Pablo
All of this data is frankly useless because of the various carriers lock-ins. There was tremendous consumer demand on the Verizon network for a decent smartphone -- hence the great numbers for Droid.

The marketplace was an utterly different landscape than it is today when the original iPhone was released, and the product cost $600.

The Nexus One is on a pretty much non-competitive network with the other two and is only available online.

The only interesting data comparison here -- other than tea leaf reading to to try to get one camp or another of fanboys riled -- will be two months of iPhone 4.0 (assuming it's AT&T exclusive) vs. Nexus One on AT&T sales.

Everything else is bait.

I would buy a Nexus One if it weren't so darn expensive. I'm not eligible for an upgrade and I can't justify paying $500 for a stinkin phone. No matter how nifty it is supposed to be.

Ok this is stupid to just compare the Iphone to the Nexus One. Lets compare the Iphone OS sales to the Android Sales.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 2:06 PM by Lewi
For some perspective and more of an apples to Apple comparison Apple sold 8.7 million iphones in the quarter ending Dec 24 (and another estimated 9 million ipod touches).
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 2:26 PM by Steko
Lewi , iPhone OS sales would have to include the iPod touch AND all 3 generations of the iPhone, that would just trump Android. (and in the 150,000 or so iPad pre-orders as well!)
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 2:28 PM by Duane
I agree with Lewi, you've got to compare OS to OS, not device to device. It'd be like saying the MacBook outsold Acer, so OSX is better.

I own an iPhone, but have NexusOne Envy after seeing a few of the apps (skymap) in use.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 2:29 PM by Eric
I want a NexusOne but T-mobile? Seriously?? I can't wait for it to be on Verizon. I actually like to have my service work everywhere I go. T-mobile is a joke!
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 2:51 PM by David S
Really...we're comparing the NexusOne on T-mobile vs the iPhone on AT&T and the Droid on VZ?! REALLY.... lets wait until the NexusOne comes to VZ and see what happens.

Horrible comparison...no one is going to jump ship from VZ or AT&T, or even Sprint for T-Mobile....

Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 3:16 PM by K
Considering that the Nexus One had virtually no promotion from T-mobile or commercial play on TV, it's not doing too bad. 90% of the cell phone user probably don't even know what a Nexus One is.

I have both an Android phone and a 3GS. I even have Android on a 3 year old Windows Mobile phone and it runes just as fast as my 3GS. At the moment I still prefer the Iphone. The Iphone is dead simple to use, a mongoloid redneck with an IQ of 10 can use it, probably why I still like it. No multitasking, terrible wifi/bluetooth stack and apple's iron grip on the apps and media are the Iphones biggest down fall. Come on Apple, let me drag and drop media to the phone without using that bloated Thanksgiving Turkey called Itunes.

Apple needs to be afraid of Android, that's why Apple is suing HTC. Apple can not compete with a free OS. It's only a matter of time.

By the way, that Android port to the WinMO phone was done by an enthusiast group in their spare time not salaried employees or a company.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 3:24 PM by Jeff Laslo
the reason the nexus 1 is slow in sales is because those of us Verizon customers that cant STAND apple and steve jobs are waiting for it to be released on the Verizon network. Nexus 1 is THE iphone(y) killer, its just a matter of time. Sorry if the truth hurts.

Whats funny, is all you mac heads forget, Steve Jobs filled our schools with apple crap figuring that when the students grew up they would all buy macs....and yet apple STILL only has 10% of the pc market. Which is where the iphone will be in a few years, 10% market share, if that at all. Ya see, people are sick of Steve Jobs trying to rule the world with proprietary crap.

And Google will set us FREE!!

mmm a deliberately misleading bar graph which places Droid in a much better position than in reality.

Have you ever worked for Fox news Peter? Because this is the kind of work their 'journalists' might produce.

The Apple haters are really losing their minds. To them it is becoming such a partisan battle that objectivity goes out the window.

"Sorry the Nexus One phone is not yet available in your country" - Google forgot that the world is a little bigger than US, no wonder their sales aren't on par with iPhone.
Posted @ Tuesday, March 16, 2010 4:16 PM by John
The real question isn't N1 vs. Droid vs. iPhone, it's how the two ecosystems will compete over time. Apple's strategy excludes most of the industry from its ecosystem, which is a big risk. Android will soon have dozens of handsets on 20-30 networks worldwide, which is a lot of force (customer relationships, marketing dollars) directed in its favor. In the PC wars openness and competition weighed decisively against Apple, but perhaps they can hold off the Android army. Time will tell. The only sure winner is the consumer.

Great comparison. I always considered myself an apple fanboy, but after reading all the cry babies comments after this post, I might have to change that.

It is only a comparison, nobody is handing out awards here for the best smartphone. I can compare the first iphone sales to cans of soup if I wanted.

This article is skewed in attempt to make the Andriod platform look like an true iPhone competitor. I'm glad to see all the readers are pointing out all the miscues.

When it comes down to the benjamin, Google's making nothing on the Motorola Android phones and almost nothing the Nexus One.

That said, Apple's making billions of dollars off the iPhone.

And finally, with the recent patent infringement lawsuit, Motorola, Verizon & yes Google stand to lose tens of millions should Apple win. Let me tell you why, Steve Jobs pissed at Google and he's hell bent on making everyone who colluded with them pay for it.

I love my iPhone and will have one till I die but there is no apology possible for the poor quality of voice service in nyc.

It is literally unusable. ANY phone call I or anyone I know makes has a high probability of dropping. A 10 minute conversation has a 75% chance of failing.

It's a total joke. Guys deal with it bc they dpnt talk as much but women can't stand it. I've convinced at least a5 or 6 friends and family to get an iPhone and often I am embarrassed.

I just dumped my original version iPhone for a Droid and it's a much better phone.

Much better.

Service is substantially improved. Size (of network) DOES matter.

The interface was simple and intuitive (at least for me). There are as many great apps in the market as the app store and I, personally, love the physical keyboard (although I also use the onscreen version from time to time as well, having been 'trained' by Apple how to).

Overall, I'd recommend the Droid of the iPhone (at least first gen) whole heartedly.

Besides, Apple has taken the path fo the dark side and Jobs IS darth vader now (Worse than Microsoft before it was slammed by the courts of anti-competitive behavior).

Apple makes great products, but, its' business practices are highly suspect. I'll stick with open platforms.

It is interesting that Flurry puts few external factors that contributed to higher DROID sales than iPHONE.

While that is true, I believe DROID did much better than iPHONE during its first 74 days after launch because.....DROD had more smart phones to compete with ( HTC HERO, iPHONE 3GS, HTC ERIS, STORM2...). While iPHONE during its launch was an iconic revolutionary device and was way beyond its competition!

What sort of applications are receiving this saturation: "...applications embedded with Flurry have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices"? This sounds incredibly dubious (and almost concerning).

- store more than 1GB of apps (up to 31GB on iPhone)
- stay malware-free (Android Market has served malware already, and Android phones have been sold to consumers with malware on them)
- replace an iPod (better media player onboard plus iTunes sync)
- run 50 different apps in an hour with no need to manage them and no stalling
- run cross-platform C code, making it easy to port desktop and console apps
- GPU-accelerated graphics in both native and Web apps
- provide free in-person support at any Apple Store Genius Bar
- more

> Apple has gone over to the dark side

That's an information-free comment.

There has always been a totally open HTML5 app environment on iPhone as an alternative to App Store. Android also uses the Apple browser core. Apple provides the user/developer with a choice of managed or unmanaged apps. Android's platforms are both unmanaged, the user must be their own malware cop, there is no choice.

Better comparison: HTC Hero vs. iPhone

-Hero has ability to use widgets on home screen
-Hero can have seven customized home screens
-Hero has the ability to create folders on home screens for better organization of apps
-Hero supports adobe flash
-Hero has Sense UI which allows you to sync your contacts with social networks and receive updates automatically
-Hero has better loud speaker and battery life
-Hero has micro SD expandable to 32gb
-Hero has open platform media player. No need to pay for iTombs.

There really is no competition. The only reason iPhone does so well is because most Americans buy what they here most about if they are not technically knowledgeable. And iPhone was the first one on the scene and got the word out quick. But anyone who does enough research and knows a few things about technology will always choose an android model over any iPhone. I can give Apple credit for promoting the iPhone so well, but thats where it ends. However, I dont think the iPhone will be losing to Android anytime soon because most people just follow the hype and not actual evidence.

i see the apple fanboys are getting worried

the iphone 3g is not a good comparison because:

-it was an upgrade to the original iphone, apple literally gave it away as an upgrade. it would be like giving away the Droid2 to the installed base

-iphone was sold worldwide, while droid only in USA. You could literally get iphones even in Haiti, the congo or somalia in africa

am sure google will catch up, the Nexus is still the most powerful in the market.

I would agree to one comment made above that anybody who is any way slightly interested in technology would have tried the iphone for sure but dumped it to goto android. There are many reasons for that but one of the main reasons for that is Google although makes a lot of money they really bring out good usable applications to the masses.

Well i feel sorry for all you guys in america i live in japan (unwillingly though) and the google nexus one with the android is sold on shelves here with the best service out here while the iphone is sold with the worst service plus everthing about the nexus one is better size, quality, apps, so there is no comparison in my mind

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a hell of a christmas.

Google was developing smartphone technologies when the original iPhone came out. However, they just strategized and waited for the market to pick up before they deployed theirs. Call it an unfair comparison, but I would call that strategy...

I think the Nexus 1 would have done better had it been advertised better or more for that matter, to me it looks like it came out of nowhere. also more people buy into the IPhone due to the Mac knowledge. Google isn't really known for products, rather software and well Google.com.

Also i think ultimately Google will take the lead as soon as people start realizing the potential of the First generation Nexus and the more to come. I mean off the bat Nexus is 400MHz faster with 256MB of RAM more. i think as soon as the word spreads of Nexus' potential and abilities people will buy into it's future offspring like HOT CAKES. I know i will.

Is anyone counting the OS version " Android" from T-mobile, HTC, Sprint, Eris, and even AT&T all use droid phones running the OS... I think Google is a monster about to explode, that's the big picture. One note, I want a phone first with some apps, not the other way around. Droids are cheaper in cost and the service is cheaper, enough to get the the wife and the kid one as well.

I have the AT&T NEXUS One and its phenomenal. Had iPhone for 2 and a half years<all versions. So impressed with the snapdragon. I'm a MacBook owner but the NEXUS is just a better device.

I think also one must consider rungs within prospects minds. People have a certain number of mental rungs for any given product, for soda, it's 5. For smokes, it's 5. For car rentals its 3. For long distance phones it's 4. The Android, or should I call it Droid, see my point, confuses the masses. Exactly what is a Droid and what is an Android? Why are competing companies selling the same smartphone but with a different name? Does the phone do something different or are they all just the same but in different packaging? Confusion is the enemy of sales. People just don't understand that the Nexus One is the most advanced smartphone to date in terms of display size, pixel resolution, megapixels of the camera, and more. People eventually will understand the Nexus One and I expect sales to rise once that happens, but educating the public is very expensive and takes a lot of time.

Its interesting folks are comparing nexus one sales to either iphone or the droid without considering one fact, maybe its me in Chicago, but, I am yet to see any advertising blitz on tv for the nexus one. Look, an advert for the iphone just went by... My point is, for lack of TV advertisements, and lack of a carrier subsidy, nexus one imho is doing great

I love it... The war between MAC and "PC" has now gone to the phone. Apple is a bunch of jerks for trying to PATENT an ACTION! I slide my thumb from left to right on my screen and APPLE wants money.

I'm going to play both sides of this. Any app worth having on iPhone has a counterpart on Droid... KEYWORD IS WORTH HAVING!!!

The Screen in general is higher quality than even the iPhone 3G.

Multi-Tasking was a bonus, but I hear iPhone released an update to support this around the time of DROID.

No G-Rated Disney quality control!!!

Apps in a STANDARDIZED LANGUAGE not some C-Structured rip off that Steve Jobs crapped out and said GIVE ME MORE MONEY TO BE A PROGRAMMER FOR MY PHONE!

Oh yeah... I can upgrade my memory or even replace it... oh and I CAN CHANGE MY BATTERY WITHOUT TECH SUPPORT!

Mac has an history of being a car with the hood welded shut. They carried this into iPod and now iPhone. Its my phone.. I shouldn't have to go to a tech center (which in my area is one in a 100 mile radius) to change my battery.

Bonuses to iPhone are the customer service is better... It has to be since its used far more regularly because you can't do anything for yourself with an iPhone.

Multi-touch is "better"... more like more supported... multi-touch is multi-touch. Oh and if apple intends to PATENT the action of sliding my thumb across the screen then they owe a couple of kids from the university that DEVELOPED multi-touch. Those kids developed and SHARED their technological advancements for the benefit of man kind. They developed this in Linux based upon the Open source structure. Wait... we've heard those words before.... Droid is Linux with a Java wrapper riding on Open Source structures and licenses!!!!! Google and Android are pushing the Open Source movement forward threatening the corporate big wigs like MS and Apple.

I do want to throw this in. iPhone is aesthetically more appealing. Comparable resolutions to Droid. Comparable quality as well. I believe Droid is a slightly smaller screen.

Both are solid phones riding 3rd generation technology. Their future competition will change hand held technology forever.

I do have to throw in a defense for verizon as well. the "If you live in a Metro area.." bit... I live 30 minutes south of DC. My friend and I can sit 5 feet from one another in my house and he'll be sitting at 1 bar @ 1x with his iPhone and AT&T while I have 4 bars 3G on Droid and Verizon. After speed testing things when we finally got him a spot in the middle of my back yard that got him a bar or two of 3G he clocked in at about 30mbps and I was riding 45mbps. iPhone will have a great explosion if/when its contract runs out and they can get on Verizon, but I know of at least 3 friends that have the iPhone that are switching to Verizon and getting the Droid after toying around with mine.

Those calling google a 1 trick pony. Are you completely retarded? Go to google and click more. They are not only top search but also highly rated in everything else they do. Google's benefit resides in the Open Source thought process of asking the consumer what they want and then providing it and having the consumer TEST it throughout development. I (as a developer) wanted to try to ride the Apple/iPhone train and after some simple math realized that I would first need to invest about $1000 to get a Mac, develop for free, and pay another $200 to request permission to be on the App Store. If I wanted to get my $1200 back I would have to get at least 1520 downloads at .99 (and Apple taking 20% off the top). On Android the consumers decide what is good or bad. I can develop it on any computer with any platform using Java. I post it immediately. I personally haven't posted anything yet so I don't know if there is a commission, but I wouldn't be shocked to see one.

Both hold pros and cons and to each their own. From personal experiences iPhone is great for multimedia purposes. Droid has good multimedia but offers greater functionality beyond it. Ironically just like PC vs. Mac... Mac is great for multimedia. PC is great for doing ANYTHING ELSE.

Bottom line... don't listen to the half offered information you'll get from either user because it is biased. Find someone who owns what your interested... ask to play around with it for a few minutes. Research the product on reputable sites that don't allow biased reviews. Make a purchase based upon the functionality you require. I bought a droid because I am an independent developer with two businesses and a full time job. Apple doesn't support or believe in the indie dev so we hover in the Open Source world. I can guarantee one thing... with over a million independent developers in the US alone, the Android systems will be receiving a flux of apps. We've breached 10k with mainstream developers and more are added daily. iPhone will continue to grow because people that might still be trying to break even. The Android Market will grow faster because it is an instant profit gain for the larger residency of developers that now do not need to buy special hardware and special licenses and pay special commissions to be most likely rejected by the elite users in the mac/iphone world.

To all u limited to the Apple Os i feel for ya. Droid has at least 10-20 different roms you can put on your phone. yall talk about sales yeah iphone has sold a lot just because it has an ipod program on it. Thats the reason everyone wanted it in the first place. it combined ipod and phone that was a real nobrainer for Steve. I was one of the kids that had the so called mac lab at schoold and those things sucked. Its all about FREEdom of choice that is what America was founed on. Google is the american dream f$%k apple

Totally agree StevenB, why must there only be one phone to chose from. I guess I should have my kidney removed and start using a iphone with kidney application instead. I am totally stoked that there is finally some competition in the market. The Droid does many creative things that the iphone cant touch and vice versa. Let us not forget that when one company completely dominates the market, creativity is stifled, i.e. Microsoft. Let make sure Apple doesn't become the new microsoft by encouraging competition in the market.

We have different point of views about these mobile phones and as a mobile phone user; I am in the side of iPhone, and I've been using my iPhone for years. I have to agree with Chris that iPhone has done a lot of vendors moving on making some real innovations that are long overdue.

Apple and Google's approaches to the mobile market is completely different.

Apple is a proprietary company. Google is a open source company.

Google is using the mobile market to influence users to use their other products.(Search Engine) The open source allows for google to run ads as well. This generates all their revenue and is beyond genius compared to Apple.

Google dominates the computer market completely. I don't know a single soul who doesn't use Google once a day.

Who cares about phone sales, the Android platform is way more expandable then Apple's. Look at the netbook market....

Don't worry Google, I still use Gmail, Finance, Docs and I even search occasionally. Maybe you should hire some people-persons though.

The first thing is you need to compare it through proper statics and in proper or same span of time.

I am completely agree with Anthony that "Apple is a proprietary company. Google is a open source company. ....

1. the iphone sales are are unfair when compared to droid or any other cdma device. the iphone was jailbroken in the first week and sold all around the world and registered in their respective gsm network. the droid can only br used on verizons network.

2. many iphones that have been purchased used are being used as ipod units and no one would even think to do that with an android. the count is unique handset downloading apps and that doesn't mean they're on a network.

3. apple has been in the OS business longer than google and it's not smart to say to compare the g1 to iphone instead of droid because google os was not actually that ready and was extremely buggy to begin with.

4. all you apple fanboys are going to be comparing the ipad to sony and amazon pads right? why not compare the newton instead since that's apple's first offering.

5. WM, Symbian, Blackberry and Android can do more than the iphone, but hey it took 2 years to get copy and paste with that advanced technology eh?.. get over it and move on fanboys

I have purchased just about every Apple product that was ever made, but it stopped at the G4. I don't like the direction Apple is going with its marketing, and software. Reminds me too much of another company I won't mention in the same breath. After a lenghty comparison of the iphone and the moto droid, I went with the droid. Best phone and internet tool I've ever owned!

Why the hell are we celebrating a phone OS that will be on every bloody phone and they'll all be the same, except for the shell? That's like going to a library, seeing lots of different book covers, but all having the same content. Big deal. Frankly, I DON'T want the same software on every bloody phone. With Android, we're going to get the same Windows crap we've had for years: OEMs loading the OS, then cramming it with useless crap that pops up every 10 minutes to tell you something you don't need to know. Talk about clone wars... "Our phone, which runs the same software, has a different background picture and helpful software that blinks and beeps to tell you that you've got an SMS waiting to be read, even though the native SMS software alerts you anyway...." God, I'm having flashbacks to my Toshiba laptop at work with all its "helpful" additions which duplicate the functionality of software that is already installed. What joy.

Ok, I have carried the Iphone and a verizon phone around for over 2 years. I do this because I wanted an Iphone and my entire family has and trust verizon. I travel for a living, on the road each and every week. In every major airport, small airports, tiny cities and big metropolitan cities. Do not kid yourself! There is NO comparison in the service....none. I am unable to use the iphone as a phone most of the time. My verizon phone always works in 9 years, probably only 1 or 2 dropped calls and I always have service! So I have my spouse that I love and will stay with, but I definately have my toy on the side. Don't think that I will ever leave my spouse for my toy. Ultimately it is the phone that is most important and with that, Iphone fails.

I am amazed at how many morons responded to this post. I mean, seriously, you guys think Google made the Droid.
The reason the Droid is successful is because it's a Motorola product, running a Google operating system.
And I totally agree, I don't miss the iPhone, and i will NEVER miss AT&T for voice calls. Enjoy your fart machine apps, I will still with a better network, a better phone, an extra battery, a flash, a 5 mp camera, and tons of apps that I use, vs over 100,000 that you dont.

I left att and my iphone 3gs for verizon and the droid and it was the best decision ever. att sucks the iphone is a nice app/music player but not reallt smart imo.

I run my droid like i do my computer oced and all :P clear call quality i have 3g now unlike being stuck on edge with att's craptastic coverage.

even with my iphone unlocked with blackrain u still cant to much with them there so limited its sad. but it is a phone anyone can use including ur grandma.

I thinks,
